What is a spatial reasoning test?

Spatial reasoning test is a tool used to assess one’s ability to understand complex plans and shapes. It is a type of non-verbal aptitude test and is also sometimes called spatial awareness test.

What skills does it assess?

There are two things that this type of test measures and they are:

  • Ability to manipulate two and three dimensional shapes
  • Ability to spot patterns and relationships between those patterns

This test is often given to job roles in the engineering department and to roles that involve technical stuff such as architects, designers and the like. It is also often used in the recruitment process in the military.

Those who score high or have high spatial awareness skills are often those who are able to notice patterns quickly. They tend to be able to quickly imagine shapes even in different angles.

At first this skill was thought to be hereditary and innate. However, according to current studies, this skill could actually be improved and acquired through repeated practice.

What types of questions should I expect?

There are different types of questions you will find in this test and they are the following:

  • Shape combining
  • Matching two dimensional shapes
  • Mirror Images
  • Three Dimensional Cubes
  • Two and Three Dimensional Solids
  • Maps

Let us look into them in more detailed way…

Combining shapes

This type of questions is like a jigsaw. You will be shown a series of shapes in pieces and you must choose one that would like look when you put the pieces all together.

This is an example of what combining shapes look like:
